Several 8x10's from recent weeks. We may lose beach locations to paint at as covid virus increases again and beaches may be closed for sitting. At top is the path at Kaloko Ponds moving into the dark trees. Below is Hookena Beach with the mountain dominating the people on the beach and in the water.
A few more summer landscapes. Top is Old Airport Park with its rocky beach. Next is the keiki pond at low tide at Energy Lab beach. I like the simple composition on this one. These are both 8x10. Last is an 8 x 16 to fit a frame my wife found at a thrift store. It's the view of Kahaluu Beach and a hut and the small church on the left. This view if popular and I've sold several similar ones plus views from the church back to the pavilion. Always a popular spot to snorkle and paint.
Newer work, some studio, some plein air. I've been painting a few sunsets in the studio, and the "tree" painting is Hookena, 11x14 done on site. The top one is 10x8 and sold quickly at the Blue Sea Artisans Gallery.
Continued the fun wave studies from thumbnails I made from my various wave photos. Then went to Kaloko Ponds north of Kona and a pair of plein air paintings of the ponds area. All in all a productive week.
A catchup week on posting. Includes Hookena Beach view, a 14x30 plein air work at the top. We keep getting cloudy weather but color beneath the layer was bright that day so captured the mountain views beneath the clouds.
I was inspired by an article in Artist's Magazine about studies of waves. Since here in Hawaii we have myriad inspiration, I did a few studies from photos I had taken while painting plein air. The below three are 8x8, 8x10, and then 5x7. It's a fun process and I can now finish almost completely in one "sitting." The water soluble oils I use set up quickly and as I paint different parts, other parts are dry enough to continue and paint over them. The white/yellow/blue in the waves I do with a stiff bristle brush to get texture and also I can lay the light over the dark and it stays put. Hope to get a few more great photos to do more of these.
I took some photos of flowers from my garden and used my last panel from a wooden screen to frame the resulting paintings. Overall it's 11x62 with each painting an 8x10. Makes a good over-the-sofa work. I've also taken the Big Wave work shown earlier to the Blue Sea Artisans gallery and will bring this on once it's varnished and ready to hang.
