I've introduced a couple of greens into my palette to allow even greater variety as opposed to mixing all my greens from blue and yellow. Even with two yellows, and two blues, I found some greens missing. I now added permanent green light and permanent green (viridian).
This painting is 8x10 from Pahoehoe Park along Ali'i Drive. I like the new greens in the foliage at the top right and palm like bush at the bottom. The water has a good variety of greens now too. The biggest room in the world is the room for improvement! Keep learning, keep painting.
One of our favorite painting spots, Kahaluu Beach. This is an avid snorkling spot although without tourists it's very quiet. Tours would usually bring tourists here so made it very busy. Now our group of about 16 painters was the majority. I painted this view south from the side of the small church at the north end of the bay. Had done a small work from here earlier, a 4x16 and now did a 9x26 to keep the panoramic look. This is three times the square area of my usual 8x10 so took a solid three hours to get it looking good plus touchups at home. I like painting larger on site but takes the first two hours of blocking in to get it looking like anything and finally the third hour it starts to come together.
Regular painting again, with about a dozen painters outside. We are now doing critiques again although not standing too close and some wearing masks. Outdoor exposure to the virus is minimal and we have had no new cases on the Big Island in almost two weeks. So far so good.
The top painting shows our beaches open again and folks enjoying the water, although no large gatherings. This is Pines Trees just north of Kona.
Below is Honl's Beach right in town.There were nice waves so I put in a few surfers. I only had a large brush but they came out OK even at the tiny size.
Our outdoor painting was suspended since March due to the coronvirus restrictions. We've been meeting outdoors again, minus our group critique sessions. Top is an 8x10 of the clouds above Kona from Old Airport Park.
Below is the Keiki Pond at the Energy Lab beach and is 9x22. Strong waves that day.
Our art group is not meeting for the duration of the virus so indoor projects mainly. I had some surfer references so did some drawings and small paintings to try these out. Need to make the paintings larger as with 6x6 and 5x7 boards the figures end up 1/2 to 1 inch size. Don't want to take out a magnifying glass to paint. Here is a page of drawings in sharpie marker. Then the three first attempts at waves and surfers. The top one I like the surfer the best.
Hunkered down at home due to coronavirus with only grocery store visits allowed. Also we can walk and workout on our own and despite parks being closed, smaller beaches are OK for a quick swim. Every other part of everyday life is postponed. So, no outdoor painting group and have to work on other projects.

I worked on 11 small 3x3 and 4x4 paintings for when the gallery opens again as these have been popular sellers at times. They are based on other larger paintings.
Another project I'm working on is paintings for some wooden screens I found at a garage sale. This one is four 8x10 panels across. I'm looking for a sunset palm tree effect. I have two more panels with 5 sections to figure out what to do with.
Started a 16x22 outdoors with a new 3 legged easel that attaches to the stretched canvas. Of course, the first thing I painted I wasn't satisfied with so I painted over it in the studio after scraping much of it off. Next time tried a more reasonable size of 11x14 and came out better the first try. Painting four times as large as usual requires some adjustments that I need to do.
Above is the 16x22, now a Captain Cook area scene.
Below that is the 11x14 at Old Airport where I did my third "cloud scene". Some days the clouds are superb so I just do the sky and ocean and rocks in the foreground.
