Four new daily paintings

Now finished 55 small works in 57 days. Experimenting between looser and tighter styles for variety. First here is a snow scene from Idaho, rest are from the Seattle Horticultural Center, where I've now done about 7-8 works. These are 6x8 (2nd and 4th) and 5x7(1st and 3rd) . 

Another batch of daily paintings

Here is another batch of daily paintings, now #50 in 52 days. Top is a view of the main bridge crossing  the Spokane River in Washington. Next is a view of some fields on the way to Spokane, cows in the foreground. 3rd is a view from Santa Monica, looking back toward LA. Last is a view from Queen Anne hill, looking south, across Puget Sound. It was a cold day with wind the day my group painted there so I skipped the outdoor painting and opted for photos to use indoors. These are all 6x8 or 5x7 inches in size. 

Night View

I'm always fascinated by our nights and artificial lighting, especially street lights, and the lights from inside windows in otherwise darkened buildings. I've done a few works in the past of these scenes so thought I'd try a couple in my daily paintings. The top one is 8x10 and is a view of 82nd street in Seattle, on the way to my house, facing east. It will need a little matte varnish at some point as dark patches are a challenge to get all the surfaces working. Also did a smaller, 6x8, of the parking lot at Gage Academy in Seattle, from a photo taken one night as I was leaving a class. The rear of my Scion XB little boxy car is peaking out on the right. 

Now on painting 46 in 48 days. Keeping the pace up and still making use of all the scenes I've wanted to try out in paint.   

    

Arizona Scenes

I've been visiting my daughter in Arizona over the last several years and taking many photos. With my daily paintings, I'm catching up on using these images as the basis for my work. These are three 6x8 views of the scenery in Dead Horse Ranch State Park (No, I didn't see the dead horse) in Cottonwood, plus the third is a scene from the drive through the mountains to Flagstaff. Now have 42 works in 44 days. Will see where all this activity leads. Will look at these for potential for larger works once run out of steam and want to slow down. It's too much fun so far.

   

Glacier scenes

This week I did two scenes of the Mendenhall Glacier in Alaska from images taken when I went on a cruise there two years ago. Today I saw the movie "Chasing Ice" which showed glaciers receding, including this one. I would like to see where the glacier sits today. The horizontal format, 8x10, shows the glacier creeping back up into the valley. The foreground used to be where the glacier was but now is a lake. The second vertical format is 6x8 and is a scene to the right of the first where I wanted to capture a small waterfall coming off the glacier, off to the side.  

Maui Scenes

To combat the winter, I've done a few scenes from Maui. These vary from 5x7 to 8x10. Also did a small tulip scene from north of Seattle from last spring. Winter has not been too bad so far except for some frosty mornings. Even seeing the sun now and then. Have kept up the daily painting with 35 done in 37 days. Still only missed the two days I traveled cross country since I started.  

  

Switch to local scenes

Continuing my daily painting. Now at number 31 (in 33 days). I'm doing local scenes from the past summer, to relieve the cold cloudy weather lately in Seattle. Was sunny today though so cool crisp day, with a full moon tonight. These works are 5x7 and 6x8. The top two are views from the Seattle Horticultural Center at Univ. of Washington. Next is a willow tree looking north toward Lake Union. Last two are about 30 miles north of Seattle. They are a tree orchard and mountains as seen from the I-5 highway, looking east.
